Rosetta Stone French (Language Software)

Rosetta Stone French Introduction:
Do you want to learn a new language with the award-winning method used by the U.S. State Department to train diplomats?
The Rosetta Stone approach, proven effective by NASA astronauts, Peace Corps volunteers, and millions of students worldwide,
teaches new languages faster and easier than ever before.
We all learn our childhood language by associating new words and phrases with
the world around us. The Rosetta Stone method replicates this process by
presenting vivid, real-life images to convey the meaning of each new phrase.
Instead of translating, memorizing, and studying rules of grammar, you actually
learn to think in the new language. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated
systematically, leading to everyday proficiency.
This comprehensive program provides up to 550 hours of mastery instruction in
listening comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking. Systematic structure
teaches vocabulary and grammar naturally, without lists or drills. Previews,
exercises, and tests accompany every lesson, and there are automated tutorials
throughout the program. Graphical speech recognition displays your voiceprint
and compares it with the native speaker to help improve your pronunciation.

Excellent Learning Experience, February 1, 2008

A little about me - I studied Spanish in college and was a 4.0 student who
was selected for a foreign exchange program in Uruguay because of my academic
performance, so I think I know a liitle about learning a foreign language. Many
of the reviews I have seen of Rosetta Stone deal with it's difficulty of
installation on a Mac or other technical issues. I think this kind of criticism,
while perhaps valid, is not the most pertinent information a potential language
student needs. Rosetta Stone V3 Level 1 French has been an excellent tool for my
son and me to learn basic French, and though we installed our copy on a PC (not
a Mac), we have had no technical issues; it could not have been simpler to
install. I learned Spanish 30 years ago, before there were computer applications
to assist with learning a language, but I am very impressed with the method
Rosetta Stone uses, and it is quite similar to the total immersion method by
which I learned Spanish all those years ago, albeit with a live instructor and
by listening to tapes of native speakers. If you just stay with the program,
things that you don't necessarily understand at first become clear as you move
through the exercises. I will say that at some point you will want to acquire a
French verb conjugation book like 501 French Verbs or equivalent, and probably a
used French college textbook, but I estimate that 95% of what is presented can
be learned by simply doing the exercises Rosetta Stone presents. One of the best
things about the program is the immediate feedback it gives you on both
pronunciation and correctness of sentences, and another excellent feature is the
"native speaker speech comparison" (that's probably not what RosettaStone calls
it); in this feature you can play a native speaker's rendition of a certain
French phrase, and then you repeat the phrase and Rosetta Stone evaluates your
pronunciation graphically.
Anyway, although I was initially dismayed by the cost of the program, I now feel
it was worth every cent.

This is an excellent followup of Rosetta stone French level 1. It is fully
immersive and succesfully builds upon the skills learned in the 1st one. There
is more speech involved, and your knowledge of French will drastically increase.
About the not installing on more than one computer, this is true, however that
is not the point of the software. It is a great product and I would recommend
buying the third installment in Rosseta Stone French v3 one once you have
mastered this.

Good Product -- Bad License, December 10, 2007
Two months ago, I bought V3 French Level 1&2 following positive experiences
with V2 German and V2 Italian. Thus far, my wife has been the primary user and
is enjoying it very much.
My problem is with the license restrictions. With V2, we could each install the
basic application on our own computers and then exchange the CDROM that has the
actual language content. With V3, you no longer need the language CDROM to run
the application, but the license is for one computer only. Supposedly you can
never move it back after transferring it to a different computer.
To use V3, I will need to borrow my wife's computer. She will become annoyed
when she wants to check her email or browse the web. We can't travel with
Rosetta Stone on a laptop if we have it installed on a desktop. If Rosetta Stone
is so distrustful of its customers, please just give us a hardware dongle to
prevent multiple simultaneous users.

Rosetta Stone French (Language Software) Level 3
Rosetta Stone Level III has been
designed in conjunction with teachers, language lab coordinators and educational
psychologists to address the language learning needs for the advanced student.
Level 3 is based on four life-skill
areas:
- transportation
- housing
- shopping
- employment
Each topic is covered in 10
immersion-based picture lessons, a live-action video and extensive narrative
lessons that focus on reading, listening and grammar. The 24 minutes of video
are accompanied by 96 minutes of audio, telling each story from four different
points of view to enable greater comprehension.
Level 3 Personal Edition builds on the
success of Levels 1 & 2 to prepare the user to communicate at school, in the
workplace and in other real-life situations. The program comes complete with an
illustrated User's Guide and a Curriculum Text book.

Can't say enough, August 13, 2008
This software is just such a great combination of the visual and the aural
that I have really learned a lot. My only regret is that there is not a Level 4
and beyond.

Don't listen to the bitter Vista guy. If you have Vista then you probably
figured out a lot of things are incompatible. That's Microsoft's fault though.
This software is fun and really helps you learn fast. The new version rocks, I
like that is kind of forces you to speak right away. It's well worth getting,
I've already been through Spanish and I plan on going through several more. It
does work with Intel Macs too in case you're wondering, that's what I use. Word.
